Scott County
The Project
Our project focuses on the question, "What does the average ninth grade student know about their community?". We recognized that many kids our age are not familiar with the historical aspects of our county. We created this website to help students and our community understand more about the history of places they see everyday. We have included maps that we created which depict Georgetown College, Royal Springs, Elkhorn Creek and Great Crossings Park, Cardome and Japanese Garden, Ward Hall, St. Francis and John Catholic Parish, and Scott County Schools.
Mapping Information
We want students to learn more than just the graphics of a map, but also about the geography behind the images. We created these maps to help people better understand and visualize Georgetown, using ArcGis Explorer Online. This program allows us to plot points of the places we researched as well as enter information and include pictures of the places. We also created sample maps of Scott County, which display certain features such as roads, water passages, and government features.

Student Technology Leadership Program
Student Technology Leadership Program or STLP is an extra curricular activity where students learn more about technology. There are many topics and categories students can choose to compete in. Some categories are judged online and others are presented in person. There is a state competition each year in the spring at Rupp Arena where students from all over Kentucky go and present their projects to judges. There is an awards ceremony that students may attend if their team or category gets first or second place. We are competing in the category "GIS/Maps/Cartography" and plan to submit our project in January.
Purpose
The reason we decided to create maps of Georgetown and Scott County is because we were interested in researching the question, "What does the average 9th grade student in Scott County know about the community?". We decided to address this research question by creating a student survey over places of interest and historical sites in Scott County. We hope to educate as many people as we can on our project and places in the community. After obtaining this data, we are going to present these maps to the student body at our school. We hope that our maps and website will increase student awareness of our community.
